I haven’t done a word problem since grade seven, and I didn’t expect to start again on a Friday morning in front of Old Navy Canada’s homepage. But the numbers were right there, and my brain went full textbook. Here’s the worksheet. Show your work.
Problem 1
Old Navy is selling all Wow Jeans for $32. A woman owns one pair of jeans, which has a hole in a place she will not describe. She buys two pairs. How much does she spend?
2 × $32 = $64.
Teacher’s note: Old Navy carries Petite, Tall and Curvy fits in women’s, so “they never fit me” is not an acceptable answer. Show your inseam.
Problem 2
Old Navy is also running an online-exclusive “Extra 20% Off Purchase,” ending 9/25, with exclusions. If the extra 20% applies to her jeans, what is the new total?
$64 × 0.8 = $51.20. That’s $25.60 a pair.
Teacher’s note, circled in red: “if it applies.” The banner says exclusions apply, and I can’t tell you from here whether a $32 price already counts as one. Your cart will know. Check it before you get attached to $51.20.
Second teacher’s note: if you’re reading this after September 25, cross out Problem 2 entirely. Problem 1 still works.
Problem 3
The woman has decided she needs “one more fall thing.” The homepage has a “FALL FAVES” section at up to 50% off, “Deals & Steals from $15,” and a “$20 & Under” section. How many fall things does she leave with?
The correct answer is one.
The real answer is three, because she opened all three sections in separate tabs “just to compare.”
Show your work: the Fall Faves banner says “That piece you can’t stop thinking about? It’s got a whole new price.” This is not a math statement. It is a trap. Circle it and move on.
Problem 4 (bonus)
Her sister has two kids. Old Navy has an Old Navy x Disney “Haunted Harvest” collection, tagged “Pumpkin patch-bound in Mickey & Friends ‘fits,” in sizes from baby up through women’s and men’s. How many family photos will be taken at the pumpkin patch this year?
All of them. There is no upper limit. Leave this one blank.
Answer key
If you only do one thing: two pairs of Wow Jeans at $32. That’s the real deal on the page and it doesn’t depend on a deadline or a code. Everything else is extra credit, and extra credit is how I ended up owning three fall “basics” last year that are all the same shade of rust.
Shipping is free for Old Navy rewards members, so sign in before you check out. Free shipping is the only kind of math I like.

Grade: B+. Would’ve been an A if I’d stopped at Problem 1.
