NOTICE OF OVERDUE ITEM
To: Me
From: The part of my brain that still thinks I return things
Re: One (1) cream knit cardigan, checked out 47 days ago and never once returned to the closet it came from
Item description: Soft, oversized, the kind of cream that pretends to go with everything and is mostly right. Originally shelved in the “special occasion” section of the closet. Has not seen that shelf since.
Original due date: The Tuesday after I bought it, back when I still believed I’d wear it twice a week “so it stays nice.”
Current status: Overdue by 47 days. Currently in active, near-constant circulation. Worn over pajamas. Worn to a work call, camera off, obviously. Worn to pick up a package from a delivery driver who did not deserve to witness the coffee stain on the left cuff.
Renewal history: Renewed daily, without formally requesting a renewal, by simply not putting it away.
Fine assessed: None, technically, which is the whole problem with owning things instead of borrowing them. There is no late fee for wearing the same cardigan four days running. There is only the mild social cost of your coworker asking “new sweater?” for the third week straight and you saying yes, again, because it feels ruder to admit the truth.
Replacement policy: I looked. Misook’s new arrivals in knitwear are up right now, and the honest move here isn’t to fight the habit, it’s to get a second one so the original can finally, briefly, rest. Here’s where I’ve been looking — they’ll also knock 20% off if you sign up for the list, which I did, immediately, no shame.
Return instructions: There are none. This item is not coming back. I have made my peace with that, and so, notice or not, should you.
