11:47pm, from my friend Dani: ok don’t be mad but I need you to look at something
11:47pm, Dani: [screenshot]
11:48pm, me: it’s midnight why are you shopping
11:48pm, Dani: IT’S RELEVANT. look at the price
The screenshot was a tracksuit. Acid-wash, the kind of washed-out grey-blue you usually only see on stuff that costs enough to make you flinch, from a streetwear label called MAGIRI that I’d genuinely never heard of before that exact moment. Hoodie and joggers, matching set, the kind of thing that looks expensive because it kind of is — except the price in her screenshot wasn’t the kind of number that makes you flinch. It was the kind that makes you sit up in bed.
Turns out the site she’d fallen into at nearly midnight was The Designer Box UK (affiliate link — no extra cost to you, just a small thank-you to me if you click through), which I’d also never heard of, and which is apparently where a chunk of the internet’s off-price designer streetwear ends up. Not a mystery box despite the name — you can see exactly what you’re buying — just deep, unglamorous discounts on stuff like Gallery Dept, Amiri, Dsquared2, and this MAGIRI set Dani wouldn’t shut up about, with free UK and US shipping thrown in so you’re not doing the thing where the discount gets eaten by a $19 shipping fee at checkout.
I did not need a tracksuit. I want to be very clear that at 11:52pm I still did not need a tracksuit. I have sweatpants. I have several hoodies. There was no gap in my wardrobe that a matching acid-wash set was filling.
I bought it anyway, obviously, because that’s how this text thread always ends, and it arrived four days later in packaging that made me suspicious it was going to be the wrong item — it wasn’t — and now I’ve worn it to the grocery store, to a friend’s apartment for a movie night, and once, regrettably, to pick up a delivery from my doorstep in a way that made the driver do a small double-take. It’s soft in the way expensive things are soft. The wash pattern doesn’t look printed-on, which after some past fast-fashion tracksuit disasters is not something I take for granted anymore.
Dani and I now have a running joke that she’s not allowed to text me screenshots after 11pm, which we both know is a lie, because the whole appeal of that site is that it’s the kind of place you stumble into late and impulsive and come out the other side with something you’ll actually still be wearing in February. Up to 75% off on stuff that was never going to be in my normal budget, easy returns if it’s not what you hoped, and — the detail that actually got me, more than the discount — free shipping both ways, so trying something on at home isn’t a bet you’re making with your own money if it doesn’t work out.
So: sorry to my bank account, no regrets to report, and if anyone needs me I’ll be the one answering the door in a hoodie that cost less than my usual grocery run.
