LAYERING, (v.): A Dictionary Entry, Heavily Disputed by My Own Closet

layering dictionary entry

LAY·ER·ING /ˈleɪ.ər.ɪŋ/ (verb, gerund)

1. The act of putting on multiple pieces of clothing at once, ostensibly for warmth, actually to avoid ever having to decide on one outfit. “I wasn’t cold, I was layering.”

2. A skill claimed by everyone on Pinterest and possessed by almost no one, myself included until about three weeks ago, when I finally understood the trick isn’t more clothes. It’s clothes built to sit on top of each other without adding six inches to your shoulders.

I want to be honest about how long I got this wrong. My early attempts were just one bulky sweater over another bulky sweater, called a system. It wasn’t a system. It was two sweaters having an argument.

3. (informal) What my coworker Priya calls “the thing you do so you can take one item off in a meeting room that’s either 61 degrees or a sauna, no in-between.”

This is the definition that actually matters. Office buildings do not negotiate on temperature. You do not get a vote. What you get is a base layer that doesn’t bunch, a mid layer that comes off clean without static-clinging to the first one, and something structured enough on top that removing layer two doesn’t leave you looking like you got dressed in the dark.

I rebuilt my rotation this week around Michael Stars’ fall “Layer Up” edit, since it’s basically built around this exact problem. The Sydney crew neck long sleeve ($98) as the base, in a color that isn’t white (I’ve learned). The Irene cardigan ($198), which actually holds its shape after eight hours of sitting in it. And the Rory knit blazer ($238), slightly too good for a Tuesday, which makes the other two look intentional. Not cheap. But new sign-ups get 15% off the first order and shipping is free over $200, and for three pieces that now form an actual system instead of a guess, I’ve stopped feeling weird about it.

4. (antonym) Monochrome-and-done. Also valid. Not what we’re discussing today.

Usage note: If a coworker asks how you’re always dressed right for that building, the correct answer isn’t to explain the whole system. Just say “layers” and let them think you were born knowing this.

The fall collection just landed, so most sizes are still there if you want to build your own version. Here’s where I got mine. It’s an affiliate link, so I earn a small commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you.
