FOR RENT. Charming one-person unit, move-in ready, ideal for the tenant who is cold in every building she has ever worked in. No lease. No deposit. Asking $148, one time, forever.
That’s the listing I’d write for the Vera Cocoon Cardigan if Michael Stars let me run their classifieds. Their own product page already reads like one. The first line of the description is literally “The layer you’ll live in.” I didn’t make that up. I just believed it.
The unit
Relaxed cocoon silhouette, which in real-estate terms means open floor plan. Made from what they call Madison Brushed Jersey, so it’s soft in the way a good sweatshirt is soft, not in the way a scratchy wool sweater promises to be “soft after a few washes.” Ribbed bands at the sleeves and neck so the whole thing doesn’t slide off your shoulders when you reach for the stapler.
It’s listed as convertible, which I appreciate in a home. Wear it open. Wrap it. Let it hang. The landlord doesn’t care.
Available finishes
Coconut Milk, Dark Basil, Black. When I checked, nearly every size in every color was still open, which in September is the closest thing to a buyer’s market I’ve ever seen.
Dark Basil is the one I’d tour first. It’s a green that reads as neutral from across a room and as “oh, that’s a choice” up close.
Neighborhood
The whole building is in a “LAYER UP” phase right now. That’s the fall campaign across their homepage, with the line “The sweaters you’ll reach for all season.” A few units on the same floor, if the cocoon is too open-plan for you:
- Irene Crew Neck Cardigan, $198. Mixed-stripe knit, faux horn buttons, and the product copy suggests wearing it buttoned as a top. That’s the studio apartment of cardigans. Everything in one room.
- Rory Knit Blazer, $238. Part sweater, part blazer, patch pockets. The penthouse. For people who want to look like they were in a meeting while having been under a blanket.
- Seraphina V-Neck Pullover, $198. Ribbed, body-skimming. Not a cardigan, but a great roommate for one.
Tenant reviews (mine)
I’ve owned a cocoon-shaped cardigan before. Not this one, a cheap one, and it had one flaw: the shape was right but the fabric pilled by October and the sleeves stretched until my hands disappeared. What I’m paying for at this price is sleeve bands that stay where they’re put. I’ll report back in November.
Terms
Michael Stars ships free on orders over $200, and new sign-ups get 15% off the first order. So the math goes one of two ways. Vera alone, with the 15%, lands around $126 plus shipping. Or you add a $68 tee from their best sellers (the Blanche tank and Lexy tee are both $68) and clear the free-shipping line, which is the “might as well furnish it” move I always make.

No pets. Kidding. Cat hair is a feature on black.
