[trailer voice, the deep kind, the kind that narrates car commercials]
In a world… where “affordable Halloween costume” has never once appeared in the same sentence as “actually good”…
One woman.
One browser tab, open at 11pm.
One budget she swore, out loud, to her roommate, she would not exceed.
SCENE ONE. Our hero discovers a flash sale starting at $3.99. She does not know yet what this will cost her in the way of self-control. She only knows the witch hat in the third row looks structurally sound, which, if you’ve ever bought a Halloween witch hat before, you understand is rarer than it should be.
SCENE TWO. A cape appears. It is not marked “vampire” but everyone will know what it’s for. Up to 75% off flashes across the screen like a warning she chooses to ignore.
SCENE THREE. The plot thickens: everything in her cart is somehow still under $9.99, individually, which means the math keeps not adding up to “too much,” even as the cart itself grows to a number she avoids looking at directly.
SCENE FOUR — the twist. She did not, in fact, need a whole new outfit. She needed the accessories. The cape. The hat. One (1) pair of fishnet tights she will wear exactly once and regret nothing about. Turns out the entire costume-budget crisis was solvable for under thirty dollars, points program included, and she’d been dreading this shopping trip since September for no reason at all.
FINAL SCENE. Roommate asks how much she spent. She says “don’t worry about it,” in the tone of someone who is, in fact, fine, actually, this time.
[voice, softer now] This October: one flash sale. One cart, under $9.99 a piece. No regrets, mostly.
Rated: Everything Still In Stock. Streaming now — or at least, on sale now, in the Halloween section, for approximately as long as it takes you to also lose an hour to it.
