I did something a little ridiculous to write this post: I wore a different pair of shoes every day for five days straight, same handful of outfits recycled underneath, just to see which style actually earned its spot in the rotation instead of taking my word for it secondhand. Here’s what held up, what didn’t, and what I’d tell you to buy first.
Monday: Combat Boots, and a Floral Dress I Almost Didn’t Wear
Chunky, lace-up, black leather, worn with a soft floral midi dress instead of the denim they’re “supposed” to go with. The contrast is what makes it work — without the boots, the dress reads a little too sweet; with them, it looks like a decision instead of an accident. By evening my feet still felt fine, which is more than I can say for half the boots I own. If you’re buying one pair from this whole list, a good black leather combat boot is the one that’ll get worn with everything.
Tuesday: Sleek Ankle Boots Made Me Rethink “Polished”
Almond toe, low block heel, the kind of boot that goes from a desk to dinner without a costume change. The only thing that matters here — and I mean the only thing — is heel height. I tried a pair with a heel half an inch taller than what I usually wear and regretted it by 3 p.m. Comfort is the difference between a boot you reach for daily and one that lives in the back of the closet by November.
Wednesday: Loafers, and a Confession
I own too many “statement” loafers and not enough plain ones, which Wednesday made painfully obvious. A simple black or cognac loafer dresses down tailored trousers and dresses up joggers in one move, and it’s the pair I actually reached for again on Friday when I ran out of clean options. The platform sole, chain hardware version I also own? Cute. Worn twice this year.
Thursday: Chunky Sneakers Did Exactly One Job Well
These only work when the rest of the outfit calms down — a fitted jacket, a simple midi skirt, nothing else competing for attention. Thrown under something busy, they just look loud. Kept simple, they’re the most comfortable four hours of standing I had all week.
Friday: Ballet Flats, Finally Not Boring
I wrote these off a few years ago as something you wear when your feet hurt and you’ve given up. The current version — slightly squared toe, thin ankle strap — changed my mind. Genuinely felt like a sneaker alternative rather than a concession.
What I’d Actually Buy, in Order
Combat boot first. Loafer second. Everything else depends on what’s already missing from your closet — you don’t need all five at once, and honestly, by Thursday I was ready to go back to the boots anyway. One solid boot, one flat, one sneaker, each in a neutral you’ll actually reach for, covers more of the season than a shoe rack full of options ever will.
