I almost didn’t write this list. Every September, half a dozen color-forecasting outfits declare fall’s “official” palette, and by the time it trickles down to an actual roundup post, most of it is already recycled from last year with a new name slapped on. So instead of pulling from a press release, I spent three weekends actually paying attention — on the subway, at brunch, scrolling past the fortieth outfit reel of the night — and wrote down what kept showing up on real people, not just runway boards. Ten things made the cut. A couple surprised me.
1. Chunky Knits, and Not the Safe Colors
Everyone predicted oatmeal and camel again this year. Wrong. What I’m actually seeing is mustard, burnt orange, and a berry so deep it borders on wine — thick, ribbed, slightly oversized. Wear one with slim black denim and stop overthinking the rest of the outfit. The sweater is doing all the work.
2. Felt Hats, Worn Like You Mean It
The wide-brim felt hat crossed over from “occasion accessory” to “Tuesday errand run” this year, and I’m into it. Tilt it back for something relaxed, keep it straight for polish. Camel or black, either works.
3. Studded Combat Boots (the one I’d actually spend money on)
If I had to pick a single item from this list worth the splurge, it’s these. Chunky sole, hardware detailing, a little attitude. What sold me wasn’t wearing them with jeans — that’s the obvious move — it was pairing a pair with a soft floral midi dress and watching the whole outfit stop looking sweet and start looking intentional.
4. Oversized Blazers, Now in Rust and Olive
Still oversized, still everywhere, but the color story moved on from black and grey toward rust, olive, chocolate brown. Button it alone over tights and boots and it functions as a dress. Leave it open over anything simple and it does the heavy lifting.
5. Leather (or a Very Good Fake) Past the Jacket
Trousers, skirts, even blazers are showing up in leather or a faux version good enough that nobody’s checking. One rule I’d actually stick to: keep everything else soft and matte so the shine doesn’t fight itself.
6. Plaid — One Piece, Not the Whole Outfit
Plaid comes back every autumn like clockwork, and every autumn someone overdoes it. One plaid piece, everything else solid. That’s the whole trick.
7. Trench Coats That Don’t Play It Safe
Longer hemlines, exaggerated collars, and colors nobody expects from a trench — deep burgundy, forest green. It’s the one coat I’d trust for a rainy commute and a dinner reservation on the same day.
8. All Black, Different Textures
Not a new idea, I know. But it’s on this list because it’s the one trend that actually works when you’re too tired to think about an outfit and still need to look like you tried. Matte knit, shiny boot, one leather piece — same color, three textures, done.
9. A Little Gold, Nowhere Near a Lot
Small doses only — one gold cuff, a metallic bag, hardware on a boot. It reads as expensive precisely because it isn’t shouting.
10. Scarves That Do More Than Keep You Warm
The oversized scarf stopped being a cold-weather afterthought this year. Belt it at the waist over a coat, knot it at the front instead of draping it, and it changes the whole silhouette of an outfit you’ve already worn a dozen times.
The Honest Take
You don’t need all ten. If I’m being straight with you, half of any trend list is filler dressed up as necessity. Pick the one or two that actually make you want to get dressed in the morning — for me it’s the boots, no contest — and build outward from what’s already hanging in your closet. Everything else on this list is optional. Those aren’t.
