Anything to Declare? Four Red Knits, One Carry-On, and My Mother Working the Front Door

red knits carry on packing misook holiday

My mother has never worked for Customs and Border Protection. You would not know this from the way she opens her front door.

She doesn’t say hello first. She looks at the bag, then at what I’m wearing, then back at the bag, and then she says something like “That’s all you brought?” or “Is that the same coat?” My sister calls it the inspection. We’ve both been going through it since 1989.

Her 75th birthday is the weekend after next. Three events in three days, one carry-on, and a standing family complaint that I “always wear black like somebody died.” So this year I’m doing it properly. I filled out the paperwork in advance.

Section A: Traveler Information

Name: The older daughter.
Arriving from: Denver, one connection, no checked bag (on principle).
Length of stay: Friday to Sunday.
Previous violations: Black turtleneck, 2023. Black turtleneck, 2024. A gray one in 2025 that she said was “still basically black.”

Section B: Purpose of Visit

Friday: dinner at the steakhouse she’s liked since before I was born. Saturday: the party, forty people, her church friends and our cousins. Sunday: brunch, then the airport.

Three different rooms, all of which will contain my mother.

Section C: Items Declared

Everything below is from Misook’s new drop. It landed on their site at the end of September, and the color that keeps showing up on the homepage is a deep scarlet red. Not a holiday-candle red. More like lipstick you’d actually wear to work. I went all in on it, which, given my record, is the closest I’ll come to a personality change at 52.

Item Declared value Purpose Officer’s remarks (predicted)
Heritage Braided Trim Knit Cardigan, Scarlet Red $358 Friday dinner, and over everything else after that “Are those gold buttons? Good.”
Sleeveless Sheath Knit Dress, Scarlet Red $298 Saturday party “You have arms. I’m glad you remembered.”
Nancy Slim Leg Mylana Knit Pant, Scarlet $288 The flight, then Sunday brunch “Red pants. On an airplane.”
Double Scoop Neck Mylana Knit Tank, Scarlet Red $178 Under the cardigan, with the pants “You look like a fire truck.” (Affectionate. I think.)

Notes on each item, for the officer’s file:

The cardigan is the reason this whole plan exists. Braided trim around the edges, gold-tone buttons, little soft shoulder pads that give it more of a jacket shape than you’d expect from something you can pull on with one hand. It’s the centerpiece of their homepage right now, and it’s in every size from S through XXL plus 1X as I write this. One thing I’d flag: the pockets are fake. It says “faux pockets” in the product details, in plain English. I still tried to put my boarding pass in one in my head. Read the details.

The dress is what Misook calls its “most popular essential,” and I believe it, because it’s the most boring garment on this list in the best way. Scoop neck, knee length, pull-on, a 3-inch slit on each side so you can walk at a normal speed. Sleeveless, which is why it needs the cardigan in October. The listing says it’s fade and stretch resistant, and that it’s knit “fully fashioned,” meaning each panel is knit to its final shape instead of cut out of a bigger piece. That’s the kind of detail I only care about because I’m about to sit on it for four hours at a party.

The pants have a no-roll elastic waistband and nothing else to think about, which is exactly what I want at 6 a.m. in a security line. Heads up if you’re tall: the inseam on a size S is 29 inches. That’s a slim ankle pant on me. It might be a capri on you.

The tank is $178, which is a lot for a tank, and I’m saying so before anyone else does. It’s scooped front and back, 23 inches long, with side slits. In scarlet it’s currently out in XS and 1X. The other sizes were in stock when I checked.

Everything above is listed as wrinkle-resistant and machine washable on cold (or hand wash), lay flat to dry. That’s the whole point of a carry-on plan. The tags say wrinkle-resistant. My mother checks for creases at the door. We’ll see who’s right.

If you want to see the whole red family together, it’s easier to look than to read me describing it: Misook’s new arrivals are here.

Section D: Items Not Declared (Still in My Cart)

Two things I left behind, and I want it on the record that I thought about them for a long time.

The Shimmer Lurex Knit Tunic ($288) and the Flared Shimmer Lurex Knit Maxi Skirt ($328) come as a pair. The knit fades from scarlet into mahogany into gold, with a bit of metallic in it (6%, per the label). The skirt is pleated and pull-on and goes to 33 inches. It is very much a December outfit. Wearing it to a Friday steakhouse in October would get me a look I’ve already been getting since the first Bush administration. So it’s waiting for the holidays. Misook has a whole Holiday Edit section with 21 pieces in it, and the shimmer set is in there.

The Red Floral Jacquard Cozy Knit Poncho ($268): crimson flowers on black, one size, 36 inches long. My sister sent me the link with the message “for Mom??” and I think she’s right. That’s not mine to declare.

Section E: Prohibited Items

  • Black turtleneck (any)
  • Gray turtleneck “that’s basically black”
  • A travel steamer. If wrinkle-resistant knit doesn’t do its job, I’d rather know.
  • Anything I’d have to explain

Section F: Fees, Duties, and Fine Print

This is the part nobody reads, so here it is short.

Shipping: standard shipping is free in the US and takes 5 to 9 business days. Express is $10.99 for 2 to 5 days. Expedited is $32 for 1 to 2. They don’t ship on weekends or holidays. If you have an event coming up, count business days, not calendar days. I learned that one the hard way with a different store.

Exchanges are free. They cover the return shipping and send the new size. Returns are a different thing: 30 days, unworn, tags on, and there’s a $10 processing fee. Clearance and final sale items can’t be returned or exchanged at all, and their sale section has some deep markdowns right now. Some of those are final sale with only a couple of sizes left. If you’re between sizes, that’s the place to be careful.

The discount: there’s 20% off when you sign up for their email list. Before you count on it for a new-arrival order, check what it applies to at checkout. I’m not the person to promise you the fine print on someone else’s coupon.

Duty owed to the officer: one compliment on the cake, sincere. One photo with the cousins without complaining. That’s the real tariff.

Section G: Declaration

I declare that the above is true and complete. I declare that I am 52 years old and still packing for my mother’s approval. And I declare that if she says the red is “a lot,” I will say thank you, because from her that’s practically a rave.

If you’ve got your own front-door inspector this season, the cardigan is a decent place to start. It goes over everything. Here’s Misook’s site if you want to look.

Signed in advance at my kitchen table, eleven days out, red pants already folded in the bag.
