Front office memo, first. My closet has a roster problem. I have something like nineteen cotton T-shirts, two dresses I only wear to weddings, and absolutely nothing for the in-between: a Thursday dinner, a gallery thing, a date where I don’t want to look like I tried. Every fall I fill that hole with a cardigan and hope.
This year I scouted it properly. Michael Stars has a “Shop Satin” tile on their homepage right now, and four of the satin pieces landed in late August, in the same four or five fall colors: Black, Molasses, Port Royale, Thunder, sometimes Crystal Blue. I pulled the measurables off every product page, checked what’s still in stock as of today, October 3, and built a board.
One roster spot. Five prospects. Here’s how I’d draft.
The combine numbers
| Prospect | Position | Price | Length | Sizes left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samira Long Sleeve Satin Tee | Top | $138 | 25″ | XS–L in every color, XL only in Molasses |
| Margo Pleated Pull On Trouser | Pant | $178 | 29.5″ inseam | Full run, XS–XL, all four colors |
| Leila Bias Midi Skirt | Skirt | $128–$138 | 30.5″ | XS–L, XL gone in every color |
| Alara Jersey Back Shell Tank | Top | $118 | 23″ | XS–L, XL gone in every color |
| Astra Bias Mock Neck Dress | Dress | $228 | 49″ | XS–L, XL gone in every color |
Same fabric across the board: their satin is a Rayon and Viscose blend (the product pages list 53/47), which the brand says is made in a more eco-friendly way than the usual poly satin. And the part that actually moved my grades: the care labels on Margo, Leila, Alara and Astra all say machine wash, tumble dry low. Leila asks for the gentle cycle. Samira’s page doesn’t list care, so I’m not going to pretend I know.
Satin I don’t have to hand-wash in the sink at 11pm is a different sport.
No. 1 overall: Samira Long Sleeve Satin Tee, $138
Scouting line: “The everyday tee, reimagined in satin.” That’s the brand’s own pitch and it’s the whole reason I took her first.
Strengths: Relaxed fit, plain crew neck, long sleeves, 25 inches long. In other words, it’s shaped exactly like the nineteen shirts I already wear, so I already know how to style it. Jeans, a blazer, a sweater over the top with the sheen peeking out at the cuffs. It plugs into the system on day one.
Concerns: XL is sold out in Black, Port Royale and Thunder. Molasses is the only color with the full size run left.
Pro comparison: the utility player who never starts the highlight reel but is on the field every single game.
Grade: A. Low risk, high floor, and it makes my cotton tees look like they got promoted.
No. 2: Margo Pleated Pull On Trouser, $178
Strengths: Wide leg, soft front pleats, an elastic back so it pulls on, slant pockets, and a faux fly so it still reads like a real trouser from the front. It’s also the only prospect on this board with every size in every color still available. Port Royale, Black, Molasses, Thunder, XS through XL. Nobody else can say that.
Concerns: 29.5-inch inseam. If you’re tall, that’s a cropped wide leg, not a floor-sweeper. Decide whether that’s a feature before you add to bag.
Team chemistry: Margo comes in the same four colors as Samira. A matching satin tee and trouser in Molasses is a full outfit that goes straight into the washer, which is frankly more than I can say for my wedding dresses.
Grade: A minus. Would be an A if I were two inches shorter.
No. 3: Leila Bias Midi Skirt, $128–$138
Not a rookie. Leila has been on the site since 2023 and carries a Best Seller tag, so this is the veteran free agent everybody keeps re-signing.
Strengths: Cut on the bias, 30.5 inches long, and the color list is long enough to need a scroll bar. The four fall shades (Crystal Blue, Molasses, Port Royale, Thunder) are $128. The rest are $138. There’s also a Petite version for anyone who’s been betrayed by midi lengths before.
Concerns: XL is sold out in every color I checked.
Film study: the photo at the top of this post is the play I’d run. Chunky sweater, bias satin skirt, done. Michael Stars’ own homepage headline right now is “LAYER UP” with their sweaters, and their Agatha Short Sleeve Crewneck Pullover ($178) comes in Port Royale and Thunder too. Same jersey colors. That’s a set play.
Grade: B plus. Proven, reliable, just not new news.
No. 4: Alara Jersey Back Shell Tank, $118
Strengths: Satin in the front, soft jersey in the back. Boat neck, relaxed, a subtle crop at 23 inches. It’s the cheapest new piece on the board and the brand pitches it as working with denim as easily as with the matching separates.
Concerns: It’s a tank, and it’s October. In my climate this is a layering piece until about April. Also XL is gone in all five colors.
Pro comparison: the two-way player. Fancy from the front, comfortable from the back. Some of us have been looking for that our whole lives.
Grade: B. Great value, wrong season for my roster.
No. 5: Astra Bias Mock Neck Dress, $228
Strengths: The highest ceiling on the board. Bias cut, a softly folded cowl neckline, extended shoulders with a little pleating at the shoulder seams, 49 inches long. Machine washable. A dress that looks like that and goes in the washer feels slightly illegal.
Concerns: Price, and the fact that it’s a dress, so it fills the “special occasion” slot I already have two of. XL sold out in all four colors.
Grade: Boom or bust. If you actually go to things, take her in the first round. I mostly go to the grocery store.
The salary cap
Free shipping kicks in at $200 within the continental US. Under that, Economy is $8 (5 to 8 business days), Standard is $25, Express is $35. So the cap math goes like this:
Samira on her own: $138 plus $8 shipping. Fine, but you’re paying to ship one shirt.
Samira plus Margo: $316, free shipping, and you’ve got a full matching outfit.
Leila plus Alara: $246, also clears the line.
New customers can sign up on the homepage for 15% off a first order. On the Samira and Margo pairing that’s roughly $47 back, if it applies to your cart. Check at checkout, not here.
Draft day logistics, read before you trade
Orders are processed Monday through Thursday. Anything placed on a Thursday or over the weekend starts processing the following Monday. Today is a Saturday, so if you order this weekend, nothing moves until Monday, and the 5-to-8-day shipping clock only starts once it actually ships. They don’t ship internationally right now, or to PO boxes.
Returns: 30 days, unworn, unwashed, tags on. You pay for the return label, and shipping fees aren’t refunded. Exchanges for a different size or color of the same item come with a prepaid label. Anything bought at 50% off or more is final sale, but all five of these are full price.
Size chart for the record: XS is 0–2, S is 4–6, M is 8–10, L is 12–14, XL is 16–18. XL is already gone in every color on Leila, Alara and Astra, and in three of four colors on Samira. If you’re an XL, Margo or the Molasses Samira are your only moves today.
My pick
With the first pick in the fall draft, my closet selects the Samira Long Sleeve Satin Tee, in Molasses, from Michael Stars. Margo in the same color goes in the second round, mostly so I clear free shipping and partly because I’ve been waiting years for a trouser I can pull on.
Disclosure: that’s an affiliate link, so I earn a small commission if you buy something, at no extra cost to you. The grades are mine and I’m sticking to them, especially the one about the grocery store.
Your turn. Which one goes first on your board? I’ll take arguments for Astra in the comments, but you’ll have to tell me where you’re wearing it.
