At shift change we do SBAR. Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation. It’s how you hand a patient to the next nurse in ninety seconds without leaving out the part that matters.
My roommate works days. I work nights. Last week she asked what scrubs to buy for her new unit, and I was too tired to have a normal conversation, so she got the handoff version. Transcribed from memory, lightly cleaned up.
S: Situation
Patient is your scrub drawer. Presenting with three tops, two pants, zero matching sets. Chief complaint, quote: “I look like I got dressed during a fire drill.”
Patient is alert, oriented, and embarrassed.
B: Background
History of buying tops and pants on separate days from separate sales. Navy that isn’t the same navy. One pair of joggers with a drawstring that got lost in the dryer in 2024 and was never recovered.
Relevant: koi’s homepage right now literally says “Life is too short for scrub tops and pants that don’t match.” I read that at 3 AM on break and felt personally seen.
A: Assessment
Condition is treatable. Three options, depending on how much you want to think.
Option 1, the low-effort cure. Their Next Gen line comes in 23 colors, and it’s built around tops and pants that match. Ready to Work Top runs $17.99 to $28.99 depending on color. Everyday Hero Pant, $17.99 to $36.99. Buy both in one color on the same day. That’s the whole treatment plan.
Option 2, new admission. The Katelyn Top just landed in their Classics line, $29.99, in Charcoal, True Ceil, Royal Blue, Navy, Black and White. If your unit has a color rule, one of those is probably it. True Ceil is the one I’d grab. It’s that soft hospital blue that makes everyone look a little less exhausted.
Option 3, for morale. The printed tops. Their French Bull tops are down to $16.99 (from around $32), and one of the prints is just Frenchies. There’s also a Classics embroidery top at $34.99 with a print called Big Blooms. Pediatrics will love you. Your charge nurse might ask questions.
R: Recommendation
Buy one matched set before you buy anything cute. I mean it. The cute top is how the drawer got like this.
Then, if you’re already at checkout: the Betsey Johnson compression socks, 2-pack, $13.99 (down from $26.99). Your calves at hour eleven will write me a thank-you note.
koi ships free at $79. Two Next Gen sets in one color gets you most of the way there, and they also run $27.97 combo deals if you’d rather not do the math after a night shift.
Pending
She bought two sets in navy. Actually matching navy. I’ll follow up at the next shift change.
